Laura Baijens has been a laryngologist at Maastricht University Medical Center since 2003. In 2018, she completed a fellowship training in head and neck cancer surgery at the same institution.

She currently serves as the chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Maastricht University Medical Center and holds a full professorship in 'Swallowing Disorders' at the Maastricht University. Her research interests focus on dysphagia, particularly oropharyngeal dysphagia resulting from head and neck cancer and neurological conditions. Additionally, she chairs two clinical guideline committees under the Dutch Federation of Medical Specialists (FMS): one on oropharyngeal dysphagia and another on (pre)rehabilitation and aftercare in head and neck cancer.

In 2023, she received the Fellow Award from the European Society for Swallowing Disorders (ESSD).
